Chapter Seventeen

The fear of the Lord is the

beginning of wisdom.

Psalm 110:10

The choices we make guide a whole generation.

Lucien remarking on the human condition.

Lucien opened his eyes, feeling like his fortified SUV ran over him. Once his vision adjusted to the light, he was staring into Galen’s rose-colored eyes.

“You’ve decided to rise from the dead.”

“It couldn’t have been that bad,” he denied.

“You picked the fortified SUV up with your mind, then turned it around and placed it on the ground before passing out. What did you think was going to happen, a walk in the park?” Galen barely kept a lid on his anger.

“I sense you may be upset with me.”

“You were always the quick one.”

“It was that or die. It wasn’t just my life on the line. Simon, Dakari, and Jaziel were in that vehicle with me.”

“They tried to kill you. First Avery and now you. What’s going to happen next? Mikhail put a mandate on travel. No one leaves unless it’s necessary and not without three or four more Hybrids with them. It feels like we’re living in a military state.”

“It’s always been that way. How is Avery?”

Galen threw his hands up. “You need to worry about yourself. No one has heard from her, and her friend is staying quiet. According to the news, she met someone and ran away to Spain or Switzerland.”

“She didn’t call?”

“Your phone is there.” He pointed to it. “It’s been silent.”

“How long have I been here?”

“Five days. It was touch and go for a while, but I think the conversion is complete.”

“Conversion?”

“Your human DNA and the alien DNA have totally integrated, making you the first of whatever we are to become. Most of it was done on a cellular level and you won’t see any changes; a little was done on the physical level, and you will notice that change soon.”

“Care to enlighten me?”

“No, if you need an explanation, come back. Right now, let’s see if you can sit.”

Galen helped him sit before he ran a full diagnostic on him. “You’re going to live.”

“Don’t sound so excited about it.”

“I’ll want to keep you for a day or two.” Lucien stared at him until he backed down. “I’m keeping the sensors on you. I want to know if you leave. Understand?”

“I can live with that. Why don’t you walk me to my house? That way, you’ll know I’m fine.”

“You’re not fine, but you are stubborn. Come out when you’re ready.”

Lucien picked up his cell phone, checking it just in case. When he was sure he had his balance, he stood and met Galen at the door.

“What else has been happening?” Lucien asked as they stepped onto the walkway.

“There have been lots of reporters speculating about why they haven’t seen you, especially since Avery hasn’t been seen. The crash was covered with wild speculation that aliens other than those they know about caused it. No one survived.”

“They planned to make sure we died even if they died with us.”

“How do you know?”

“They blew themselves up. It wasn’t just a crash.
